The largest US audience ever recorded watched videos online during July, according to a new study.
Findings from comScore’s Video Metrix service revealed that 158 million surfers logged on to watch video of some description – an indication to those involved in online marketing services that they may benefit from incorporating them into their advertising campaigns.
Google proved to be the most popular destination for sourcing online film, constituting 42 per cent of all internet viewings. Viacom followed with 3.8 per cent and Microsoft came in third with 3.0 per cent.
The study also showed that the typical online video user spent 8.3 hours watching clips, with the average length of video being 3.7 minutes.
A recent survey by Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project indicated that using video could help websites, as audience figures had increased since 2006, with 62 per cent of respondents stating they used sites such as YouTube and Google Video.

Campaigns conducted via digital media are complemented by the simultaneous use of traditional advertising channels, according to an industry expert.
Speaking to eMarketer, the senior manager of Del Monte Foods’ digital and integrated marketing department, Doug Chavez, commented that his company has found that online efforts work well with national television advertising, which creates good brand awareness.
"Online is much more trackable. You can look at Nielsen data and so forth for broadcast. But with online media we can also say, ‘people spent this much time in our ad unit’," he remarked.
Mr Chavez added that the level of detail achieved through online reporting, as well as the granular data generated, is impossible to attain through television or print analysis – indicating that online marketing services might benefit from employing such strategies.
Those in the industry were recently advised by Will Hodgman, comScore’s executive vice-president for the Asia Pacific region, to embrace the growth of social networking, which is fast becoming integral to people’s lives.

Microsoft’s Bing is finding it difficult to retain customers in the face of Google’s monopoly of the market, it has been suggested.
According to the editor of .net magazine, Dan Oliver, while Google has become a verb and is trusted as a company of developers, Bing does not have longevity on its side and it is easy for both consumers and those involved in internet marketing services to switch back to their default browsers.
"Bing is a very new search engine – there are lots of things that aren’t so good about Bing at the moment – but there are some things which are causing quite a stir," he said.
Mr Oliver went on to suggest that Bing was being used more frequently than Google in the areas of image and video search as it provides different features to search for – such as size and orientation – although these functions do not always work.
A recent survey by Chitika found that Bing was third in the overall search rankings, behind Yahoo and Google in first place.

Digital marketers and those in the online retail industry could benefit from reducing the number of buttons on shopping pages, it has been suggested.
Writing on the eConsultancy blog, Graham Charlton stated that recent results of an A/B test revealed that removing buttons on certain pages could improve conversion rates instantly – indicating that online marketing services could help their brands by doing so.
According to Mr Charlton, retailer Laura Ashley increased conversion rates on its site by 18.87 per cent by removing an ‘update shopping bag’ button and replacing it using fainter ink.
He went on to say that the site had also varied the size of other buttons to make the checkout link more obvious.
A recent study by Forrester Research – the Broad Reach of Social Networks report – indicated that the older generation were increasingly using the internet for social networking, with 70 per cent of surfers over the age of 55 logging on to sites like Facebook.

Search engine optimisation techniques such as keywords are subject to the same regulations as internet adverts, according to two industry bodies.
The Financial Services Authority (FSA) and the Office of Fair Trading have issued a set of guidelines to internet marketing services, which emphasise the fact that words used to trigger ads will be judged similarly to ad content, Pinsent Masons’ Out-Law News reports.
Furthermore, sponsored links must be in line with whatever search terms are used and the website that is generated as a result of the keyword must be in accordance with expectations created by the linking word.
Both organisations advised "firms [to] be mindful of this when purchasing – or instructing media agencies to purchase – search terms on their behalf from search engine providers".
Previous research by the FSA in 2007 discovered a widespread breach of marketing regulations throughout the financial sector – which could have been a prompt for the creation of the new industry checklist.
Marketers were recently given a professional level plan by KeywordDiscovery, which added more features and reports to its research tool.

Campaigns involving social networks should be directed increasingly at older people, new research has indicated.
Forrestor Research’s Broad Reach of Social Networks report revealed that 70 per cent of surfers who are over the age of 55 are using social media pages, with people over 34 being the most prominent visitors to such sites – suggesting that online PR should be aimed more at their demographic.
According to one of Forrester Research’s analysts Sean Corcoran, more than half of those aged between 35 and 44 are part of a social network such as Facebook or Twitter.
"Social applications geared toward older adults will now reach a healthy chunk of their audience," he said.
The data also showed that of the over-55s joining social media sites, 12 per cent of them are creating content such as blogs, story posts and audio and video uploads.
Previous research from Just Retirement found that 65 per cent of those over 50 were using the internet regularly to engage in shopping activities.
