American cable network, HBO, are turning their attention towards social media marketing in a bid to promote past and returning shows, according to an article published by New Media Age.
Well-known for producing shows such as The Wire and Curb Your Enthusiasm, the network are looking to harness data – such as Facebook ‘likes’ – to provide personalised recommendations.
An application, found on the HBO UK fan page on Facebook, uses a user’s ‘likes’ to provide a definitive list of shows that they might enjoy.
HBO UK marketing director, Ian Fullerton, commented on the application.
He said: “The HBO Facebook application is a unique way for us to suggest relevant products to fans. The suggestions are based on users’ lifestyle choices and Likes, as well as their entertainment habits, so a person interested in trainer brands, for instance, will have a high relevancy for a show like Entourage.”
HBO have also revealed that future activity will include a quiz relating to HBO shows on Facebook, as well as HBO Sessions – a series in which bloggers discuss shows, the first of which will be centered around Mildred Pierce.
