According to a new report social network giant Facebook lost 600,000 UK members in December.
The report from SocialBakers suggests the hugely popular Internet destination lost 1.86% of its total UK audience over the festive period.
Facebook have been quick to dismiss the report however.
In an emailed statement, the firm stated that stories relating to the loss of users in certain regions emerged from time to time, but the figures should not be taken at face value.
The statement continued: “Some of these reports use data extracted from our advertising tool, which provides broad estimates on the reach of Facebook ads and isn’t designed to be a source for tracking the overall growth of Facebook.
“We are very pleased with our growth and with the way people are engaged with Facebook – more than 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day.”
Despite the festive drop, Facebook still generated 33 million unique users within the UK last month – sixth in the world ranking. The US is top of the pile with 169 million unique users a month, with Brazil, with 65 million, and India, with 63 million, following.
Figures suggest that Facebook is now used by nearly 53% of the UK’s population, or around 62% of the country’s Internet users as a whole.
SocialBakers is a Czech-based social media monitoring firm supported by Index and Earlybird. It helps measure traffic for ad firms using the social media platform for Internet marketing purposes.
The report has once again raised the question as to whether Facebook in the UK is currently at saturation point, something SocialBakers chief executive, Jan Rezab, agrees with to an extent.
However, in a company blog post he points out that over 15% of the UK population are too young, at under 13-years-old, to go on the site. A further 16.5% are in the over-65 age bracket, a group which only makes four per cent of the UK’s Facebook users.
Rezab added that after a week or two the figures would reshuffle and probably return to normal as the holiday traffic would more than likely account for bigger growth.
