Thomas Lyon is the third new graduate trainee to join the team at ClickThrough Marketing, having impressed us at our inaugural graduate recruitment day. He filled us in on how he was settling into life on the SEO team, how he managed to cycle over 950 miles in just 12 days and which famous pipe-smoking detective he’d like to trade places with.

Who are you? – Thomas Lyon, graduate trainee at ClickThrough Marketing.

When did you start at ClickThrough? – Monday, January 14, 2013.

What does your role at ClickThrough involve? – I provide support to the account executives in the SEO department. So, at the moment this largely entails running reports and completing the variety of ad-hoc tasks that pop-up on a day-to-day basis.

What’s your background? – I’ve had a variety of part-time jobs in the past, but this is essentially my first step up onto the career ladder. Prior to that, I studied philosophy at Sheffield University, graduating last year.

With your background in philosophy, why did you decide to go into SEO? – Marketing has always fascinated me. It’s the combination of finding new solutions for old problems – which is a massive part of philosophy – and dealing with people regularly which really appealed to me. Digital marketing and the Internet are constantly evolving too, meaning that there’ll always be new developments and technologies to get involved with. I like to be challenged, and on first impressions, a career in SEO appears to provide plenty of challenges, whilst also being very rewarding.

How have you found ClickThrough so far? – I was told when I had my interview that ClickThrough was ‘like a family’, and that’s how it’s been. It’s been really enjoyable and everyone’s been really friendly. The SEO team have been particularly welcoming – they’re always willing to offer their time and have helped me settle in.

What’s your proudest moment? – Can I have two?

The first would have to be achieving a first in my degree. Having invested so much time and effort over the three years I spent at uni, it was hugely satisfying.

The second one was cycling from John O’Groats, up in the north of Scotland, down to Land’s End in Cornwall – which is about 967 miles. Though I’ve always enjoyed cycling in my spare time, I’ve barely been on my bike since!

Because of the distance involved, I spent the whole of my final year of uni training for it. The ride itself was, as you could imagine, incredibly gruelling – a real test of endurance. I managed to do it in 12 days, but I was still exhausted two weeks later!

If you were stuck on a desert island and were only allowed to take a book, an album and a luxury item, what would you choose? –

  1. Book – The Stand by Stephen King: It’s a book I started reading a while back, and though it grabbed me I never got round to finishing it, despite going back to it at various points. With all that time to kill it’d be great to have something new to take in.
  2. Album – What Did You Expect from The Vaccines by The Vaccines: I’m a big fan and it’s a great album – one that I listened to pretty much non-stop when it first came out. It’ll always remind me of what I like to refer to as the ‘easier days,’ back in my final year of uni.
  3. Luxury item – An iPad: I know it’s probably a popular choice, but you could load it up beforehand with books, films, music and apps – there definitely wouldn’t be a shortage of things to keep myself entertained with. The only problem is that I’d have to impose a daily restriction on the amount of time I used it for – to make the best use of the battery.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be? – Hmmm, I’d probably go for Sherlock Holmes. It’d be pretty cool to be detective for a week, especially one as brilliant as he is. His knowledge is fantastic and he’s a master of disguise. But, most importantly, he’s astute when it comes to dealing with and solving problems, even the toughest ones – which I think would come in handy.

Finally, where do you see yourself in seven years? – I’d like to be able to have built-up my knowledge in SEO and have gained enough experience to achieve a high-end managerial position eventually.
