One advertiser has told the Guardian this week how he has managed to create on online marketing campaign for free.

The newspaper reports that Matthew Inman, a web developer and internet entrepreneur based in Seattle, developed a way of advertising his websites without having to pay.

By engaging people in free online quizzes the article states that Mr Inman was able to get bloggers and those using social networking sites to promote his sites.

This, it is noted, is the demographic that is most highly regarded by search engines and that by enticing people to answering a dozen simple questions the user is awarded with a widget that can be attached to a blog or social networking page.

Inside the HTML of this widget, however, is a link to a different site which – once noted by search engines – can be used to raise its own page rank and accompanying keywords – also placed in the HTML code.

"I created a few of these linkbait pieces and they gained quite a bit of traffic, but I still wasn’t getting many signups … Eventually I created [a] quiz and added a link to the quiz badge that said ‘free online dating’ and linked to my homepage," he said.
