Social networking and viral video will be a vital part of online marketing campaigns in 2008, it has been suggested.

According to research put together by some of the key predictions for this year in internet advertising will be related to web 2.0 and what the Times states Bill Gates has named the world’s "second digital decade".

In his weekly round up of industry news, search engine optimisation consultant Pascal Fintoni said that the news was just one of a host of predictions for 2008 and that there were a number of other buzz stories currently circulating in the field of internet marketing.

He cited an independent review conducted by Which? magazine that found Bebo to be a better option for users than Facebook and MySpace as it was simpler to use – which may be of increasing interest to internet marketers as the year progresses.

Last year Facebook was at the centre of controversy due to a new online advertising application named Beacon.
