Search engine giant Google has announced it is to revamp its search system so that searches will return a variety of results, not simply webpages.
In a move that is likely to have a strong impact on search engine marketing, Google is to enable users to search results from news sites, blogs and video services – among others – all under one search.
This universal search function will allow users to bring together all the information on a search in one place, because until now these different sections have been kept in separate places, meaning searches need to be repeated in order for users to find all the relevant information.
"It’s breaking down the silos of information that have been built up," Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president of search and user experience, explained.
The move could provide a greater opportunity for search engine marketing on Google’s notoriously austere homepage, as links from a variety of sources will now be offered on the one page.
