Search engine giant Google has pulled the adblocking app Adblock Plus from its Google Play store.

With Google making a lot of its revenue from companies placing ads on its Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) as part of their PPC marketing campaigns, the move from the Internet firm could be seen as a way of protecting its interests.

Adblock Plus is designed to cut the number of ads users see. Google claims it “interferes with or accesses another service or product in an unauthorized manner.”

This is in violation of section 4.4 of the firm’s Developer Distribution Agreement.

Adblock Plus co-founder, Till Faida, appreciates that Google does rely upon ads for generating revenue, but feels the removal of the app is unjustified.

He said: “I realise that advertising revenue is important to Google, but understand that Adblock Plus does not automatically block all ads; we simply allow users the choice whether to block ads or whitelist them.

“We even encourage advertising that is done appropriately and conforms to an Acceptable Ads policy, which is debated and decided in an open public forum.

“By unilaterally removing these apps, Google is stepping all over the checks and balances that make the Internet democratic. People should be really alarmed by this move.”

The app is still available for download from the Adblock Plus website.
