Video search engine blinkx has reported a tenfold increase in use over the past 12 months, in news that may be of interest to those in search engine marketing.

Figures from Hitwise Intelligence reveal that traffic to the search engine was ten times higher this May than in 2007.

Over this same period blinkx added new content partners, allowing it to power more video search and advertising for other websites.

Suranga Chandratillake, founder and chief executive of blinkx, said: "It’s clear that there will continue to be great demand for our technology among users, advertisers and content owners who want to take full advantage of the thriving video web."

Blinkx boasts 26 million hours of content and 350 media partnerships, including the BBC, Channel 5 and CBS.

It notes a recent report from the IDC that suggests that while video downloads are becoming increasingly popular, the accuracy of video search is rarer.

Early in May, blinkx launched its Content Correlation Engine, which allows media companies to match textual and video assets on every page of their websites to searches and attract more people.
