Yahoo! has announced that it intends to create an email system that is geared towards social networking.

In what may be of interest to those in online marketing, at the heart of the new changes will be a revised inbox that will be able to sort out and prioritise emails from contacts, reports the BBC.

Brad Garlinghouse, Yahoo’s head of communities and communications, said: "There is an opportunity for email to be a richer experience by being more social … it’s enabling connections to give richer experiences."

The company said it hopes to be able to incorporate some of the strongest features of networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook into its home page, news page and email service.

Yahoo! Mail recently announced that there will no longer be tagline advertisements at the end of emails, yet those who may miss them will be able to add a customised signature to their correspondence.
