A new report from Hitwise has revealed that 70.77 per cent of all online searches made in the US in July were carried out on Google.

Yahoo! followed in second place with 18.65 per cent of searches, while Microsoft’s MSN Search came third with a 5.36 per cent share and Ask took fourth place with 3.53 per cent.

The figures indicated that Google has managed to increase its market share by ten per cent year-on-year and two per cent compared with the previous month.

According to Hitwise’s Heather Dougherty, a general rise in the number of people visiting Google-owned properties may be one of the reasons behind the company’s success in the search domain in July.

She said: "Looking back over the past 13 months, in addition to the growing share of searches, traffic to Google has continued to increase."

Meanwhile, new data from comScore has shown that social networking website Orkut, which is owned by Google, experienced a 41 per cent increase in global visits between June 2007 and 2008.
