A study undertaken by Shopzilla for Shop.org has found that 66 per cent of the businesses polled operate brick and mortar stores in website marketing.

The eHoliday poll also found that more than 56 per cent of online retailers expect sales to increase at least 15 per cent from a year ago.

Search engine optimisation businesses may also be interested to hear that 38.13 per cent of the respondents came to search engines first when undertaking online shopping, with 45.77 per cent using results from the online resources to find shopping websites.

Sucharita Malpuru, a principal analyst at Forrester Research told DM News: "The good news is that [online retail sales] growth will outpace nearly every other sector of consumer spending."

Over a quarter (25.68 per cent) of the online retailers polled also reported that they had already started Christmas shopping.

The news comes as a study by IMRG and Capgemini estimates £320 million will be spent on internet Christmas shopping on December 8th.

According to the research, shoppers are forecast to spend £13.16 billion in the final quarter of 2008, which is the equivalent of £215 per person.
