Companies are likely to find that online video presents a lucrative internet marketing opportunity, as traffic to video websites is growing strongly.
According to research from Hitwise, the number of people visiting such sites has risen by 41 per cent in the last 12 months.
In February, video websites accounted for one in every 35 internet visits in the UK, compared to one in every 50 during the same month last year.
"Video is now a key component of the online landscape in the UK," states Hitwise director Robin Goad in a blog post.
YouTube took the biggest share of online video viewing at 62.9 per cent. This was followed by the BBC iPlayer with an 11.2 per cent share.
Also appearing in the top ten was Google Video, MegaVideo, MetaCafe and Vuze. The BBC iPlayer was also the 22nd most popular website overall in February.
Phil Turnbull, marketing manager at hosting company Hostway, said recently that video is fast becoming an essential web marketing tool.
