Trends in internet searches tend to reflect what it happening in the real world, according to new research from Hitwise.
Robin Goad, research director at the company, said that searches for house prices, for example, often increase during boom times.
Similarly, searches for interest rates spike during the weeks when monthly rate decisions are due, he explained.
With this in mind, internet marketing teams may enjoy more success with their ads if they relate them to real life events.
And Mr Goad suggested that with the economic crisis in full swing, finance-related search terms like interest rates are becoming increasingly popular.
Meanwhile, Google has launched several financial display ad templates for use on Google Finance and elsewhere across the Google Content Network.
These could be implemented by finance companies and those looking to take advantage of increased consumer interest in the sector.
Adverting on Google Finance could allow them to reach a more relative audience.
