Google has launched a new gadget that allows website owners to track their own search trends in a similar way to the annual zeitgeist.

Working on a smaller scale, the embeddable Google Trends gadget provides a tool though which companies can monitor the popularity of specific search terms on their own websites.

This could allow internet marketing teams to create more relevant online ads that are tailored to the needs and preferences of their customers.

In a post on the official Google blog, RJ Pittman, director of product management at the search giant, said the gadget is "as easy as cut and paste" and confirmed that users can choose which trends they want to track.

Visitors to the site will be able to view the results – which are updated daily and are based on search query volume – in graph form.

In addition to the original Google Trends service, which allows web users to compare global interest in certain topics, Google also has a Hot Trends service, which is updated hourly and provides a snapshot of fast rising searches.
