Sitemaps are the ideal way for companies running a search engine optimisation campaign to improve their rankings, it has been claimed.

According to an article posted on the Bing Community blog, sitemaps allow bots to crawl domains more effectively by remembering the pages every time they visit.

Furthermore, keeping content updated will also mean the freshest and most relevant information is picked up, which may make the website more enticing to browsers.

However, Bing warned enterprises not to use a sitemap as a "mere URL dump for every page on your site".

Similarly, links should all be checked as search engines "have a very low tolerance for broken link errors in sitemaps".

Instead, only the most important areas companies want to be indexed need to be included.

This advice comes after Bing released details of its summer update, which it claimed will focus on entertainment and the improvement of content sources for a variety of topics.
