Microsoft’s "decision engine" Bing recorded a seven per cent growth in its share of the US search market during the four weeks to June 26th, according to new research.

Figures from Hitwise show the site accounted for 9.85 per cent of all queries during the period monitored, putting it third overall.

Yahoo! Search, which came second, had a 14.37 per cent share of the market. This was broadly flat compared with the previous month.

Google remained the sector’s dominant force, handling 71.65 per cent of searches during the four weeks. This was down slightly from 72.17 per cent in May.

Elsewhere, in news that may be of interest to companies using search engine marketing, Hitwise found that longer search terms were on the rise during June.

Queries with five, six and seven words all increased by one per cent to make up 8.61 per cent, 4.70 per cent and 2.58 per cent of searches respectively.

Two-word entries remained the most common, however, accounting for 23.42 per cent of the total.

In related news, comScore’s latest analysis gave Google a 63.7 per cent share of the US search market in May, with Yahoo! on 18.3 per cent and Microsoft on 12.1 per cent.
