However, recent developments mean that we are rapidly moving away from just SEO, PPC and even social media as we see a convergence of devices which bring the internet to mobile phones and set-top boxes for TVs. Not only this but there are also advertising opportunities over gaming devices.

The growth of internet-connected devices is growing far faster than predicted; for instance, living room devices are expected to reach 540M users by 2014. This does not include the phenomenal rise in smart phones, the launch of the ipad, digital TV and so on, all of which enable people to surf the Net from wherever they choose.

It is obvious from the new formats which the IAB has been considering, as well as introducing, that any business who is serious about internet marketing needs to look at all the different platforms which will provide a route to potential traffic. For instance, if you make gaming accessories, you will undoubtedly already be looking at advertising on the Xbox, but there are many people who are unaware of the many different ways to market your business online that include new devices, new networks and new opportunities e.g. creation of apps.

It is not just about in-your-face banner ads, but about creating compelling and innovative content. It is surprising, for instance, how many people have downloaded the Compare the Meerkat iphone app, which whilst free, has helped to build brand recognition, trust, loyalty and raised a few smiles. This is hardly out of the box thinking as, for years, corporates have endeavoured to have the coolest giveaway in the conference bag, but it is about getting in to the mindset of your potential customers and meeting them where they hang out.

Taking a long hard look at the opportunities available, and those which will be coming our way over the next few years, may help define your internet marketing strategy in the future. Your customers will soon be able to connect from wherever they choose on whichever device they wish, and you need to meet them there.
