Social networking site Facebook now accounts for almost a quarter of all web pages viewed in the US, according to a new report by Experian Hitwise.

The data, which does not include visits from mobile applications, revealed the company has seen its share of individual page views go up by 7.5 percentage points over the course of the last 12 months, while Google has slipped to third in the rankings with just over five per cent.

Youtube took the search engine's place in second with rise of three percentage points giving the video sharing a share of 6.3 per cent.

Earlier this year, Facebook also overtook Google in terms of visits to the domain, with the social media service now the target of one in ten internet activities.

Internet marketing service providers may be interested in the statistics, as research by web monitoring firm comScore released earlier this month showed the site was responsible for delivering over 297 billion display ads in the third quarter of 2010.
