Facebook saw revenue sky-rocket 60% to a colossal $2.02bn (£1.26bn) in the third quarter: Primarily due to a significant surge in ad sales.
In total, revenue generated from advertising was up 66% to $1.bn, with a big chunk of the figure down to mobile advertising.
Speaking about the figures in a conference call, Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said: “For nearly ten years, Facebook has been on a mission to connect the world.
“The strong results we achieved this quarter show that we’re prepared for the next phase of our company, as we work to bring the next five billion people online and into the knowledge economy.”
Mobile is definitely where the firm sees its future, with Zuckerberg himself describing Facebook as a ‘mobile company’, and with 874 million users now using their phone to access the site, that is a point hard to dispute.
In a Facebook statement issued to coincide with the conference call, it was revealed revenue from mobile advertising accounted for 49% of the firm’s total advertising in the third-quarter – around $880m in monetary terms. This figure is a huge leap on the $150m the firm generated from the ads when it first really started to develop its mobile advertising strategy.
Although ads seem to be making a large portion of the firm’s revenue, chief financial officer, David Ebersen, told analysts he did not expect the level of adverts appearing in people’s news feeds on the the social networking site.
The firm seemed positive with the current user engagement with ads however, suggesting the average user already engaged with more than one ad per week.
