A key bigwig at Bing has blogged on the important role spelling, punctuation and grammar plays in how a page ranks on the search engine.
The search engine giant’s Duane Forrester has took a firm stance on the issue: Something rival search engine Google has never explicitly done itself.
In the blog, Bing Senior Product Manager, Duane Forrester, stated: “Just as you’re judging others writing, so the engines judge yours.
“If you struggle to get past typos, why would an engine show a page of content with errors higher in the rankings when other pages of error free content exist to serve the searcher?
“Like it or not, we’re judged by the quality of the results we show. So we are constantly watching the quality of the content we see.”
Forrester does say some leniency is inevitable however as, even in the case of big publishing houses, the occasional typo or error does slip through the net. It is only when consistent errors occur in content he suggests punishment may be dished out.
Although Google’s Matt Cutts has often suggested site owners should keep in mind spelling and punctuation on their pages but has never officially stated the search engine giant will take action against pages featuring content with spelling errors.
It does however have its Panda algorithm in place to weed out low quality, spammy copy although Panda is understood to be more focussed on encouraging digital marketing experts and businesses alike to create fresh and unique copy on their site rather than the spelling and grammar side of things.
