Internet marketing services providers may like to consider how they can best take advantage of the mobile market as, according to Google, the sector will continue to grow rapidly over the next few years.

In an interview with the Guardian, the company's mobile project manager Robert Hamilton stated that there would be five billion mobile phone users by next year, out of a global population of seven billion.

Continuing, he pointed out that there would be more mobile internet users than desktop users by 2014.

To demonstrate the speed of expansion in the sector, Mr Hamilton highlighted statistics that showed mobile search had doubled in 2010, with the number of queries performed on Android devices tripling in the first six months of the year.

The rise in the use of smartphones may be one reason for an increase in the number of marketers using click to call features in their ads, which has seen a growth of 28 per cent per month in recent times, according to Search Engine Land's Pamela Parker.
