Google has started experimenting with the mobile-first search index that they announced in October.

On 13 October, Google’s John Mueller announced at Pubcon that Google will be shifting its search index’s priority to mobile. On Friday 4 November, a post on the Google Webmasters blog announced that Google had started experimenting with the mobile index on a small scale.

To make our results more useful, we’ve begun experiments to make our index mobile-first.

“We understand this is an important shift in our indexing and it’s one we take seriously. We’ll continue to carefully experiment over the coming months on a small scale and we’ll ramp up this change when we’re confident that we have a great user experience.

Google has rolled out the mobile index already, but on a very small scale. While announcing this, Google didn’t give any information on the matter, leaving the question of how many people the update currently affects uncertain.

As stated during the announcement, Google has once again confirmed that the index will continue to support desktop-only search indexing – for site owners who don’t have mobile sites.

In the Google Webmasters blog, Google said it was just beginning the process of moving over to a mobile first index, yet it gave webmasters and SEOs a list of recommendations on changes that they should carry out before the full effect of the mobile index comes into place.

Responsive design and dynamic serving mobile sites that are verified with Google and  whose primary content and markup are the same for both platforms, do not require any changes to be made.

If this is not the case, you should visit the blog and take a look at Google’s recommendations so that you’re prepared for the big change.
