Sellers of products online should ensure their items are correctly categorised if they want to maximise the effectiveness of their search engine optimisation (SEO) campaigns, one expert has claimed.

Writing for Search Engine Land, Arpana Tiwari provided a number of tips to help companies ensure their goods get the exposure they need.

She explained that sites such as Google use algorithms to establish the relevance and ranking of results.

However, firms that put goods into incorrect or mismatched categories might find their products suffer from low visibility and in some cases "virtually no traffic".

The expert also noted that organisations should take steps to avoid listing items that are out of stock because this could lead to firms experiencing a decline in their online reputation as well as a drop in click-through rates.

Other expert advice that companies looking at SEO strategies might want to consider is that of Search Engine Watch's Mark Jackson, who noted that having a well thought-out content plan is vital.
