Those making use of social media to improve their online PR should take care to constantly monitor and update their page, according to one writer.

In a piece for Online Social Media, Debbie Turner said a common mistake is failing to invest enough time into this channel.

"Constant updating and monitoring is necessary to avoid losing engagement with customers so you will need a certain level of commitment," she stated.

The writer also advised those utilising social media for online PR purposes to avoid being too "boring or predictable".

She said firms should try to make content interesting for those who join a Facebook group because this could encourage them to link it.

Companies were also warned against setting up a personal page for a business account, because this violates the terms of the social media site.

Facebook currently has more than 500 million active users, with 50 per cent of these logging on each day.
