Google has posted its results for the first quarter of 2011, revealing that the search engine has seen its revenues increase by 27 per cent compared with last year, including growth in its online marketing services.

Total revenues for the three months ending in March stood at $8.58 billion (£5.24 billion), of which $4.57 billion was made outside the US, including $969 million from its UK operations – 11 per cent of the total.

Income from its pay per click services grew by 18 per cent for the quarter compared with 2010, with the cost per click rising by eight per cent on last year.

Commenting on the figures, the company's chief financial officer Patrick Pichette said: "These results demonstrate the value of search and search ads to our users and customers, as well as the extraordinary potential of areas like display and mobile."

Recently, Google has seen several changes to its boardroom staff, with former chief executive officer Eric Schmidt stepping aside and the company's founder Larry Page being brought back on board.
