Google the worlds leading Internet search engine Google have launched a location-based news feature which will compile news from any local area.

The new feature will be accessible through Google News on Android and iOS devices, allowing readers to see local news grouped by their location at the time according to IT Pro Portal.

The new feature will be great news for any search engine marketing company because this is the first time it has reached the smartphone.

The announcement came today from Google’s blog which said:  Today we’re exciting to announce a new feature in the U.S. English edition called ‘News Near You’ that surfaces news relevant to the city you’re in and surrounding areas.”

“We do local news a bit differently, analysing every word in every story to understand what location the news is about and where the source is located. Now you can find local news on your smartphone.”

To those worried about data privacy, Google emphasises that the location data it collects is anonymous and deleted after one week. It is thought that a worldwide rollout of the feature will follow soon.
