New recruit Allan Akers gives us the lowdown on his new role in our SEO team, his time in the RAF and why he believes Google+ could be a Facebook-killer.

Who are you? – Allan Akers, SEO Account Executive at ClickThrough Marketing.

When did you start at ClickThrough? – At the beginning of July 2011.

What will you be doing at ClickThrough? – Through the efficient management of my clients’ accounts I will be ensuring that ClickThrough delivers it’s searchengineoptimisationservices in an effective and timely manner – see what I did there? 🙂

What were you doing before you arrived at ClickThrough? Where did you work? – I started my career in the Royal Air Force as an Aerospace Systems Operator. I served in the Falkland Islands and the Arabian Gulf and had the chance to see some amazing places like Dubai and Egypt and even met Abdullah II (the Jordanian King) at an Ambassadors reception in Aqaba Jordon, wasn’t offered any Ferrero Rocher though.

During my time in the RAF I was fortunate enough to be allowed to setup my own business and at the grand age of 21 I had my own website design company.  Through the course of my work I started to realise that most website designers didn’t have a clue about SEO and I made it my mission to understand the search engines and how to give them what they wanted to ensure that my clients, as well as myself, could stay ahead of the competition. I remain on this quest to this very day as Google constantly refines it’s algorithms and the interconnected web continues to evolve.

What accounts/clients have you worked on before? – Over the years I have worked with hundreds of independent self-catering and hotel owners and have had clients all over the world from Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands to Corfu and the Nevada Desert. My favourite client was an Interior Designer based in Lichfield who designed many of the latest Ministry of Sound nightclubs and I learned all about photography, website design and business promoting his portfolio.

What are you most proud of in your career to date? – As well as SEO I have a passion for Photography and am most proud of being good enough to be the guest judge of an annual photography competition run by Shell.

I have also had my work published in regional newspapers, brochures, walking guides and on postcards, but my latest achievement (which I’m really proud of and which was published this year) is a children’s book about The Secret of the Stone Circle which features one of my images on the front cover.

What do you love about your job? – Constantly learning and being challenged. I love being told I’m wrong and then learning why, gives me a real buzz and the occasional red face.

What do you think is the number one thing for online marketers to watch out for in the next year? – I predict that for the year ahead Facebook will be starting to worry about Google’s new sharing platform (Google+) and that Facebook’s limited design and innovation will lead to massive numbers of loyal followers & businesses defecting to what will be a revolution in social media/networking and experience.

Who do you most admire and why? – I admire the men and women of the armed forces who risk their lives daily in the defence of our freedom.

What is your favourite book? – I don’t read books unless they have big colourful pictures.

What is your favourite film? – Top Gun – just want to be Maverick.

Name your top three songs? – 1. N-Trance – ‘Set You Free’, 2. Cygus X – ‘The Orange Theme’, 3. Temper Trap – ‘Sweet Disposition’.

What do you like doing in your spare time? – Trying not to kill myself on my mountain bike, going to the Cinema and spending time with my children.
