Australian online shoppers on the rise Online advertising opportunities in Australia are growing rapidly and could be significant over the Christmas period, according to a new report.

The study, conducted by Hitwise, revealed that web traffic for shopping and classified sites was up from 6.17 per cent to 6.34 per cent for the week ending November 24th, according to BizReport.

It was also revealed that Australian shopper's spent around $8.6 billion (£4.2 billion) online last year on an estimated 200 million Christmas gifts - with eBay taking a 29 per cent share of traffic.

Sian Kennedy, spokeswoman for eBay Australia, told Australian Associated Press this week that people were turning to the web to secure unique gifts and avoid the stress of the high street.

"You can go to [a department store] and buy what someone else is going to buy, [but] it's not something unique or different," she said.
