Blogging 'offers search engine optimisation boost' Firms are increasingly embracing social media as a way of raising their online profile - and blogging can be one of the best platforms for climbing the search engine rankings, it has been claimed.

Harvey Raybould of hosting specialist Compila said the blog is still the most effective tools for boosting search engine optimisation (SEO) despite it being something of a "relic" among publishing platforms.

"From web design firms to shoe manufacturers, a wide range of online businesses are experimenting with blogs to boost their bottom line and increase their SEO power," he said.

However, it is important to remember that while a blog can provide a quick lift up the search rankings, blogging for SEO is not a one-off, "hit-and-run" operation and it takes sustained efforts and frequent updates to maintain a high placing, Mr Raybould noted.

According to figures from Econsultancy and ExactTarget spending on digital marketing spend is set to rise by 17 per cent in 2010 as firms switch from traditional ads to social media and search engine marketing.
