Google claimed the largest share of the US search engine market in February, accounting for more than twice the number of searches of its nearest rival.
The Mountain View-based firm, whose rankings are a key goal for businesses' search engine optimisation, hosted more than 3.6 billion searches by internet users in the US, giving it a 55.8 per cent share of the market.
It also experienced a year-on-year growth of 40.3 per cent for the month.
Closest to Google was Yahoo!, which took a 20.7 per cent of the market with over 1.3 billion searches.
Making up the rest of the top five was MSN/Windows Live Search, AOL Search and Ask.com Search. AOL was the only provider in the top five to see its market share slip, with a fall of 6.1 per cent.
In a separate study by Hitwise, Google was the most popular search engine in the UK in the month up to February 10th, accounting for 77 per cent of the country's searches.
