'Impossible' to develop an optimisation-ready site Designing a website that is ready for search engine optimisation "simply cannot be done", according to one commentator.

Stoney deGaytor of Pole Position Marketing wrote on WebProNews that web designers are able to create sites that are search engine-friendly, but search engine optimisation "requires a completely different skill set".

Mr deGeytor said that while web design and search engine optimisation (SEO) are closely tied together, the latter requires "hours of additional research".

"Hint: if your web developer says they will SEO your website for you as part of the one-time design fee, they are a liar," he wrote.

He added that collaboration between an SEO provider and a web designer in the creation of a website can prevent the former from having to request changes at a later stage.

The comments follow Li Evans' assertion this week that companies with websites will have to look beyond pay-per-click and take "a more holistic view" of the market as personalised search becomes more popular.
