Paul Honey, managing director of Strange, said 2009 is likely to be "an interesting year".
He added: "Recognising trends is only half the story - our role is to help businesses thrive in a changing environment."
The report also found economic change is likely to affect consumer behaviour, with need for improvements in return on investment - advice that search engine optimisation companies may need to follow.
SEO companies may also be interested to hear as more website marketing companies look to digital, keyword inflation is most likely to continue at a high level, with more negotiating over cost per action/acquisition advertising.
Strange's research finishes that key areas for expansion will be local search/localised services, social media and mobile advertising.
