Majority of business websites 'lack foundations'

The majority of businesses in the UK with websites did not think about search engine optimisation issues before creating their website, a new report has revealed.

For 86 per cent of companies surveyed by XSEO, appearance, content and functionality are priorities when designing a website, meaning the website "lacks foundations", according to Matt Paines, head of the consultancy.

Mr Paines said that as a building without foundations falls down, so is a website rendered invisible if it is not easily signposted online.

"If it came down to a simple choice, I'm sure every business would rather have a mediocre looking website which attracts lots of visitors, than one that is stunning but nobody can find it on the internet," he told creativematch.

Mr Paines' comments come after Stoney deGaytor wrote on WebProNews that designing a web-friendly website and search engine optimisation require "a completely different skill set".

Mr deGaytor added that collaboration between a search engine organisation provider and a web designer on a website's design can prevent the former from having to request changes at a later stage.
