Google is testing the potential of its AdSense internet advertising program to distribute online television content, according to reports.
The New York Times has revealed that the company has joined forces with Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, to deliver a new animated series exclusively through the web.
AdSense will distribute video clips from Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy to thousands of websites frequented by the target audience for the show - primarily young men - instead of serving the usual static ads.
A lawyer who worked on the project, Karl Austen, remarked: "What is exciting is that this is a way to monetise the internet immediately.
"Instead of creating a website and hoping Seth's fans find it, we are going to push the content to where people are already at."
Google recently announced on the Inside AdSense blog that its video units for advertisers have been made available in Australia and Japan, allowing marketers to create customised video players to embed into their sites.
