SEO-friendly pages, usability tests 'good for browser compatibility' Google has recommended that web developers undertake extensive usability testing and create search engine-friendly pages to improve the likelihood that their sites will be viewable in all browsers.

Writing on the Webmaster Central blog, Google developer programs tech lead Maile Ohye explained that there are several basic tenets to adhere to when building cross-browser compatible websites.

She noted that using HTML rather than AJAX, for example, can help to improve website accessibility, while using validated coding and checking for errors with external tools can also iron out any discrepancies between browsers.

"When your site renders poorly or is difficult to use on many browsers you risk losing your visitors' interest and, if you're running a monetised site, perhaps their business," Ms Ohye stated.

The comments follow the launch of the Google Chrome browser last week, which, according to Net Applications, now holds between one and two per cent of the overall market.
