A website selling one of the most sought after Christmas gifts this year has increased its market share by 265 per cent with the help of search engine optimisation (SEO), it has emerged.

Wii-consoles.co.uk, which deals in the sourcing of Nintendo Wii video games systems ahead of the Christmas rush has become the 58th most visited website in the UK following a recent SEO campaign.

According to Robin Goad, director of research for online marketing company Hitwise, the site favoured an SEO campaign instead of paid search and is now reaping the rewards.

"It’s interesting that wii-consoles.co.uk has managed to achieve this growth through effective SEO rather than aggressive paid search, which accounts for just one per cent of its search traffic," he said in a blog.

Earlier this year, a spokesman for internet online marketing company HubSpot said that paid-for search as well as organic SEO were beneficial to retailers and businesses.
