Online marketers looking for help with generating those all-important keywords have been offered a list of some of the best tools in the business.

Josh Dreller of Search Engine Land said that there are literally "hundreds" of applications out there for coming up with new key phrases to enhance the effectiveness of a pay per click marketing campaign.

The "big daddy" is Google’s External Keyword Tool, which comes direct from the "belly of the beast" that dominates the search engine market.

Google also has a Search-based Keyword Tool that generates ideas for phrases using actual queries entered into its main site that are matched to specific website pages.

Another useful Google application is the AdWords Wrapper, which takes a list of existing keyword phrases and generates a combinations of broad, phrase and exact matches, phrase and exact matches and exact matches only.

Elsewhere, Microsoft’s adCenter Labs offers a keyword suggestion feature alongside a "multitude" of experimental applications like keyword mutation tools, keyword research and search funnels.

Earlier this week, Google unveiled a new keyword targeting tool for users in Canada and the UK that allows them to increase the reach of their campaigns using broad match modifiers.
