The use of social media sites such as Facebook is gaining acceptance among UK firms, both as an internet marketing services strategy and an internal networking tool.
According to Spencer Parker, group product manager at Websense, many companies are beginning to appreciate the role that social sites can play in boosting a company's profile and accessibility.
"The vast majority of businesses have their own Facebook page and they want to allow their users to get access to that page. They may be using it for brand awareness as well as their own internal usage," he told an audience at the Infosecurity Europe event in London.
However, he warned that opening up a brand's page to the public could have risks, as it invites malicious postings. Therefore, he said it is vital for firms to ensure that they are not seen to be facilitating the spread of malware or other harmful data.
The Infosecurity Europe is taking place at Earl's Court between April 19th and 21st and will highlight some of the latest innovations in web security.
