Microsoft and Google have been ranked among the top ten most socially responsible US corporations in a poll of consumers.

Research carried out by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship (BCCCC) and the Reputation Institute listed 50 companies based on public perceptions of their approach to issues like citizenship, governance, innovation and leadership.

The organisations used a total of 24,000 individual ratings to compile the index.

Microsoft, which provides search services through Bing, as well as pay per click marketing via adCenter, ranked fourth overall behind Kraft Foods, the Walt Disney Company and the number one firm, Johnson & Johnson.

Google took tenth spot, putting it ahead of firms like Adobe, Dell and

Elsewhere, Yahoo! came 35th.

"In today's business environment, there is an increasing pressure for companies to act responsibly," the BCCCC said.

The research centre was established in 1985.
