As user engagement with the web continues to grow, so to will spending on internet marketing, according to Nielsen Online.
In a blog post, analyst Charlie Buchwalter said consumers are using the internet for a wider variety of purposes and spending longer online.
For advertisers, this has opened up a number of opportunities and despite the recession many are spending more on the online medium, he explained.
Mr Buchwalter also predicted that in terms of both advertising revenue and commerce share, the internet will continue to outperform other media as the economy starts to recover.
The growing popularity of social media and online video will help to ensure that the long term prospects for internet marketing are "bright", he added.
Research from the European Interactive Advertising Association shows that seven out of ten advertisers in Europe have increased their budgets for online ad spending for 2009, with funds being diverted away from more traditional forms of media.
