Internet marketing and search engine optimisation is something that businesses need to consider early, according to one expert.

According to Irish industry website Silicon Republic in the last decade online advertising has changed from being considered an afterthought to a primary resource for marketing for many businesses.

Speaking to the site, company director of Giftvouchersnow.com, Cathy Mc Govern said that regular maintenance is a vital component to a successful website.

"You could have a brilliantly optimised site and get a high listing in month one and by month 10 you could be slipping back down again … partly because the engines change the way they rank sites from time to time.

She also warned however that this could also be due to the fact that increasing knowledge of SEO means businesses competitors could be doing their own campaigns.

Earlier this month Joel Carlson wrote in a blog for answersite.com that it was often client expectations that posed the biggest challenge for SEO companies as they do not understand how SEO works.
