Google Unveils Ranking Boost for Apps using Indexing API

Written by Sarah McCay Tams | 30 Sep 2015

Less than a year after announcing its first app ranking boost Google has launched an additional ranking boost for apps that use the new App Indexing API, reports Search Engine Land.

According to Google Webmaster Trends Analyst, Mariya Moeva, talking at SMX East this week, Google is able to gather extra engagement data from apps that use the new API, which helps it determine how useful the app is to its users.

Further announcements by Google at the industry conference include the launch of a new set of documentation for iOS Google app indexing, which works with the new iOS 9 operating system.

Meanwhile, Google Search Console has some beta features App Indexing developers can trial. These include:

  • Segmenting out Search Analytics data based on clicks on the search result links versus clicking on the install app button.
  • The ability to fetch as Google rather than using the APK version published on Google Play.
  • Fetch as Google results to also show the complete API response including title, description and API URL.
