Phil Cook, senior web developer, joined the ClickThrough team in March 2015. We caught up with him to find out about how his vast knowledge of web programming languages has evolved from his childhood 56k dial up modem, and his dream to jet off and cover international sporting events as a roving reporter
What does your role at ClickThrough involve?
As a senior web developer at ClickThrough Marketing my role involves delivering web solutions for our clients and internal staff. I have also been asked to review and improve our current processes and procedures within the web development team with current best practices such as version control and task management. We have now adopted an agile methodology and will continue to improve our processes going forward to best suit our needs and the needs of our clients. I am also sharing my knowledge within the team and helping to train team members.
What will you bring to ClickThrough?
Over 10 years’ experience within the web industry! I have a vast knowledge of web programming languages and great communication skills to translate complex problems into simple solutions. I have specialised in the affiliate marketing industry and also had great experiences of single and multiple product web applications.
What’s your background?
I have been interested in computers from a very young age which revolved mainly around video games. When I got to 14 we first got the internet on a 56k dial up modem and I remember being amazed at it and wanted to build my own website, which I did.
Since then I took a BTEC in computer studies and worked for JD Weatherspoons as a shift manager in Cambridge before finally embarking on my career as a web developer.
What do you most enjoy about your role at ClickThrough?
Every client and project is different. I can be doing a simple text change or creating a complex system talking to other computer systems and passing data between the two.
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
My biggest achievement to date was in my previous role, where I managed a team of developers, one of whom was a junior developer. I work with him closely and trained him up, each day sharing more and more knowledge and pitfalls that I had also fallen into. After only 15 months he was promoted to web developer and was gaining advanced programming skills.
Finally, if you hadn’t joined ClickThrough what other career path might you have considered?
I have always wanted to travel the world, plus I am sports mad, therefore obviously I would be a sports reporter covering the top sporting events around the globe, including Formula 1, Football, Boxing, Tennis, Winter Sports and everything else in between.
