SEO game changer? Google and Yahoo could team up - Schmidt teases

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has hinted that the search giant could form a search partnership with rival Yahoo!

Schmidt teased that a partnership between the two could happen at some point the future during an event in Toyko - setting tongues wagging in the search industry.

The two firms previously had a deal in place to form a partnership in 2008.

However, it didn't materialise as Google pulled out.

At the time, the growing search engine feared the government would declare the agreement as monopolising the search engine market.With similar tech giant Microsoft facing anti-trust patents across Europe, Google dropped out of the partnership.

Unexpectedly, Yahoo then went onto form what is now known as the Yahoo-Microsoft Search Alliance, combining their search engine with Microsoft's offering, Bing.

Schmidt is reported to have raised the idea of renewing the deal with Yahoo! whilst speaking at an event in Tokyo.

Dow Jones reporter, Kenneth Maxwell, who attended the event, told Forbes: "Yes, I can confirm, Eric Schmidt definitely said they'd be interested in working with Yahoo! US.

"He also said nothing doing for the time being, but they would be interested. It was also mentioned to him that there is new management at Yahoo! US, with a Google connection. But he played it pretty straight."

Maxwell went on to add: "He also said they expressed this interest to Yahoo! before on a number of occasions."

Maxwell's nod to the renewed Yahoo! - Google connection comes after high-powered female executive Marissa Mayer made the move from Google's boardroom to the Chief Executive's chair at Yahoo! following the well-publicised sacking/resignation (dependent on sources) of previous chair, Scott Thompson, who had apparently embellished his CV.

Any partnership between the two search engines could have a significant effect on SEO - potentially expanding the reach of optimisation efforts across several platforms at once, without the need to invest in Internet marketing strategies for each individual platform.
