Social media site Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday today (February 4).

Created by computer programmer Mark Zuckerberg from his Harvard College dorm room in 2004, Facebook has gone on to find a massive global audience. Figures have shown that the site has 1.23 billion monthly users, and, according to research by eMarketer, is used by 35.7 per cent of the population in Western Europe and 24.9 per cent in Central and Eastern Europe.

The site's users have made 201.6 billion friends on the site, and have clicked on the now iconic 'like' button around 3.4 trillion times.

However, as well as allowing the masses to see their friend's photos, leave messages on their walls, and ultimately keep in touch with one another, Facebook has also provided businesses with a platform from which to reach new audiences. Businesses have utilised  the pages feature to promote new products and services, highlight competitions, communicate with both potential and existing customers, and much more through social media marketing campaigns.

Despite its dominance in recent times, however, some sections have forecast the decline of Facebook.

Warwick Business School's Dr Markos Zachariadis, an assistant professor who's conducted research into Facebook and social networking innovations, stated: "It is the largest social network in the world, but many are questioning whether it will survive another 10 years.

"Another innovation and network may come along to threaten its dominant position in the market.

Dr Zachariadis did go on to add: "But Facebook is in a good position to expand and grow further, thus creating a strong 'network effect' and adding new services to keep users engaged."
