It covers the 12 largest sofa specialists in the UK, including DFS, ScS, The Sofa & Chair Company, Sofa Club, Sofas & Stuff, SofaSofa, Swyft, Sofology, sofa.com, Darlings of Chelsea, Loaf.com, and Fleming Howland.

Pay-Per-Click marketing is constantly evolving, with more and more advertisers being forced to hand over a lot of control to Google's algorithms as the push for automation grows ever stronger. There are still key elements of control that we have though, the main one of these being budget which is ultimately something the algorithms can't take from you. That's why being smart with your budget and ad coverage is essential to achieving strong results and bettering what your competitors have to offer.

For Q2 2026, the average monthly budget wastage across these UK sofa specialists was £85,544 with some of the top players in the market spending a considerable amount on areas and audiences unlikely to deliver a return. We can see this in more detail when looking at the average monthly cost per cost-per-click (CPC) amongst advertisers, with the average of this metric being £9. This highlights how competitive the market is and how important it is to control your budgets effectively.

There are varying monthly ad budgets across the competitors in the report. While this gap highlights the competitive advantage that larger budgets can provide, it's not just about spending more; it’s about spending smarter. By focusing on driving efficiency in campaign management, targeting, and budget allocation, businesses with smaller budgets can still effectively compete with larger players. Investing in data-driven strategies and refining ad performance can help close the gap and maximise the return on every pound spent, enabling growth even in a competitive landscape.  Relative to their spend, three brands reported the lowest monthly cost-per-click (CPC) at £2, and SofaSofa reported the highest at £73.

The report highlights the importance of budget efficiency by comparing monthly ad spend with estimated CPC in relation to your competitors, see who has the highest and lowest CPC. To maximise the effectiveness of your budget, it’s essential to focus on driving CPC down while maintaining or improving campaign performance. In this report, SofaSofa has the lowest estimate monthly ad spend at £655, and DFS has the highest at £2,630,000. 

By optimising targeting, refining ad copy, and leveraging data to identify high-converting opportunities, you can ensure every click delivers maximum value. This approach not only stretches your budget further but also boosts your return on ad spend (ROAS), enabling you to achieve stronger results without simply increasing expenditure.

Technical Website Compliance

Savvy digital marketers know that having a technically sound website is an essential component of a successful fully integrated digital strategy - plus a site capable of maximising conversion performance. For sofa specialists, they'll want to ensure key informational pages, such as branch locations, payment options, and delivery estimates, are clearly signposted and not blocked off by 4xx errors.

In our previous audit, Darlings of Chelsea reported the most 404 errors (726). This quarter, Darlings of Chelsea has made progress to reduce their total to 297. Though they’re still the brand to watch, they’ve taken positive steps to improve their website optimisation. Currently, the brand with the most 404 errors is Ribble Cycles (99). 404 errors can be especially harmful when they appear on important landing pages shared through social media, emails, or advertisements. Users who click promotional links expect immediate access to relevant content, so broken destinations can create disappointment and reduce campaign effectiveness. This can also waste marketing spend.

Site Speed & Conversion Rate Performance

When 62% of consumers are less likely to convert if they have a negative mobile site experience, ensuring that your site is quick and easy to load will see a significant improvement on your overall conversion rates. Sofa specialists may be tempted to include large, high-quality images on their sites to show products at their best. However, when also needing to juggle large quantities of products, sofa specialists must ensure they are striking a happy medium between form and function.

In our previous audit, Sofa.com reported the slowest mobile site speed (4). This quarter, Sofa.com remains the brand to watch, and they’ve since decreased their score to 2. Slow mobile site speeds can negatively affect content consumption, particularly for users trying to read articles or watch videos. If media takes too long to load or buffers constantly, visitors may stop engaging with the content altogether. This limits the effectiveness of the website’s messaging and content strategy.

Building Competitive Advantage with Domain Authority

Domain authority (DA) is an essential metric for measuring the effectiveness of SEO performance and helps create a reliable overall gauge of how effective your site is at achieving organic traffic, i.e. ‘free’ traffic that isn’t gained through sponsored ads. By working with a digital PR specialist, sofa specialists will be able to reclaim existing link opportunities, along with strategising on engaging, eye-catching PR campaigns that will gain backlinks and, even more crucially, referral traffic and brand awareness.

A ‘good’ DA really comes down to how your competitors are performing, however it is generally considered average between 40 and 50, good between 50 and 60, and excellent above 60. In our previous report, Fleming Howland received the lowest DA score (31). This quarter, Fleming Howland continues to sit at the bottom of the leaderboard, and they’ve since slightly decreased their score to 30. Websites with strong authority often experience better performance across a wider range of pages, not just individual articles. Because search engines already trust the domain, multiple sections of the website may benefit from stronger visibility. This can increase traffic across the entire site rather than isolated pages alone. 

Organic Performance – Mobile & Desktop

A strong organic performance is strategically important as it ensures your site ranks above competitors for core, transactional keywords. When 93% of your customers won’t go past the first page of Google, your absence or lack of targeting for essential keywords will cost you conversions. During lockdown and Covid, we saw consumers invest in their home environments, making them more comfortable and stylish. However, following this boom, we are witnessing near-universal falls in traffic across the homeware sector.

Two brands reported a decrease in organic traffic on desktop, with The Sofa & Chair Company, seeing the biggest loss (-24%) — an improvement from -28%. On mobile, three brands reported a decrease in organic traffic, with The Sofa & Chair Company seeing the biggest loss (-48%). Mobile search results often display differently from desktop search results. Features such as map packs, app suggestions, featured snippets, and shopping results can push traditional organic listings further down the page. This may reduce click-through rates for mobile users.

Universal Search Opportunity

Google Universal Search Results are an evolving opportunity to make your pages visible on a SERP (Search Engine Results Page). Universal results often appear before traditional listings and are eye-catching for users. Universal search results refer to rankings on a SERP that are not the traditional ‘blue line’ Google link, and a retailer can appear for universal search results without being strong in standard rankings. 'Reviews' and 'images' are both great options for sofa specialists, who can demonstrate customer satisfaction and product styles directly from the SERP.

DFS continues to secure the most Universal Search appearances (22,729) — a decrease from 29,375 previously. The majority of their appearances came from ‘images’ (20,600).

The Longtail Keyword Opportunity

Longtail keywords are often considered high intent and potentially more likely to convert as a searcher is being more specific. Optimising for longtail keywords also puts your content strategy in a strong position to rank for new search terms as they enter Google’s index. Sofa specialists will want to ensure they're including phrases which show a high purchase intent in their strategy, such as terms including 'quick delivery', 'no interest finance', or 'matching three piece suite.'

DFS continues to secure the most longtail keyword appearances for position 3 (5,067) — an increase from 4,486 previously. DFS also continues to secure the most appearances for positions 4–10 (13,337) — an increase from 13,249 previously. Longtail keyword content can better support users at different stages of the customer journey. Some users may search for educational information, while others are ready to compare products or make purchases. Detailed keyword targeting allows websites to meet these varying needs effectively.

Facebook Adverts

With the number of Facebook users in the United Kingdom (UK) hitting over 44 million users in 2023, it is not surprising that companies have jumped at the opportunity to advertise on the social media platform. Facebook’s UK digital advertising revenue has been estimated to have breached 2.6b GB pounds in 2019. For UK sofa specialists, Facebook ads are an opportunity to ensure customers see product launches, sales, and promotions.

Top Social Shares & Content

When  it comes to social media and on-site content strategies, it is important to release content that has a longer shelf life. An article is considered 'Evergreen' if it has maintained its relevancy to an audience for longer. It's great for your engagement, but great for Google too, who will recognise content that achieves traffic over a long period. Pinterest is a useful platform for any brand within the homeware space, such as sofa specialists, as it boasts a comparatively more affluent audience than other platforms, who are immersed in the decision-making stage of purchasing.

Loaf.com secured the most Facebook Likes (177,700) — an increase from 177,500. Loaf.com secured the most Instagram followers (489,900) — a decrease from 491,200. Facebook was the most popular social media platforms of all brands. Sofa Club received the highest total engagement rate (12,257), and Darlings of Chelsea secured the highest average engagement (164). 

Website Readability & Accessibility

About 20% of people in the UK have a disability – 2 million of which are people living with sight loss. In addition, 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women have some degree of colour vision deficiency. Sofa specialists should ensure they are not excluding visually impaired customers on the basis of having a non-accessible site and must ensure that all potential sofa customers are able to browse products with ease.

In our previous report, sofa.com received the most accessibility alerts (199). This quarter, sofa.com is the brand to watch, increasing their accessibility alerts to 258. Too many accessibility alerts may make a website feel unreliable or poorly maintained. Users could assume there are technical issues with the site, which may damage trust and reduce confidence in the brand.
