Google has announced the launch of its new Insights for Search tool, enabling marketers to examine detailed search volume figures.

The application gives advertisers and marketing executives the ability to track search volume trends based on region, time period and categories, among other factors.

Users can convert figures into a downloadable file that can be imported to a spreadsheet and view search patterns in a visual format, Trevor Claiborne of Google said on the Inside AdWords blog.

He explained: "[Google Insights for Search] provides more flexibility and functionality for advertisers and marketers to understand search behaviour, and adds some cool new features like a world heat map to graphically display search volume and regional interest."

Hal Varian, chief economist at Google, told the New York Times that while Google Insights for Search was primarily created to help marketers, the search engine hopes the free tool will also be used by others.
