Google has a more effective keyword search than its closest competitor Yahoo!, according to a recent study.

The survey, conducted by Outsell, questioned a number of small businesses on the effectiveness of the search engines and found that 58 per cent of them said Google was effective – compared to 32 per cent for Yahoo!

According to BizReport, it was also revealed that the same study applied to larger businesses found only a one per cent difference between the two search engines, with Google achieving a 63 per cent effective rating and Yahoo! recording 62 per cent.

However, the website claims that this could relate to the varying ways that businesses of different sizes choose their online advertising packages as well as the difference in levels of funding.

It was found that smaller businesses are currently applying about twice as much of their advertising expenditure to internet marketing than their larger counterparts and that click fraud is a major deterrent for some bigger firms.

Last week a spokesman for the Internet Advertising Bureau said that it was "definitely advisable" for small businesses looking to improve their websites to seek professional advice.
