Methods of search engine optimisation (SEO) have "come of age" and as such, one expert has published five definitive things to remember when attempting to improve search rankings.

According to Sid Peimer in an article for bizcommunity.com, most retailers struggling to make the most of the benefits of SEO need to understand first of all that "Google rules, you don’t" and that investigating what is the most search engine-friendly content is essential.

He adds that title tags and meta tags should be relevant and that this should be backed up by frequently updated keyword-rich content.

Inbound links are another area where Google focuses importance and adds that although these can be purchased, generating them organically is preferable.

Finally, he notes that during the first six months of a site’s life it will not be ranked and that during this time marketers would do well to invest in all the paid-for ads they can get.

Google recently updated its AdSense referrals system.
